MAY - MOVIES
(Links go to IMDB, or super-special trailers)

I tend to upload these pictures within the day I view a movie (My Architect was yesterday, just made it for May.) Earlier in the month, I had nothing but brownish Earth-toned movie title covers (Network, Warrior, Ip Man, MI4) and thought I should restrict myself to the same color scheme, make a bizarre theme out of it. Netflix streaming often betrays my indecisiveness; with dozens of films already in my Queue (I may as well have seen them! Let’s find MORE), I often try to discover a film at random or pick one trivially (I like Superman?) So sticking with a color scheme might’ve worked. But then Avengers had to be good enough for me to check out, and that cover’s all over the place. Despite all that, it’s been a good month of movies…

Network - Classic great cinema. Ahead of its time, eerily predicts the rise of “sensational” news and Corporate dominance
Warrior - Exhilarating, fierce. Dug the drama, acting, fighting. Though maybe too fast-paced, melodramatic
Moneyball - Interesting and well-produced. A good underdog story
The Artist - I didn’t react strongly to it, but it was sweet. I’m conflicted about it.
My Architect - Underwhelming/inconsistent visual style (for some reason this really bothered me), though contemplative and meaningful
Ip Man - (prun. “Eep Mahn”) More depth than I expected, really satisfied. I need to check out Bruce Lee movies next
Avengers - “That’s my secret Cap, I’m always angry.” Best #1 before-summer super smash-box-office-blockbuster-monkey-movie ever (what?)
Waiting for Superman - The Teachers Union is at fault for our failing public schools, protecting its worst teachers while holding back its best. It’s an argument, and it’s convincing. The Superman metaphor is apt and sad.
Bridesmaids - Didn’t find it as funny as I’d hoped, fun characters though
Mission Impossible 4- Imaginative gadgets and some exciting scenes, pretty lame story.

MAY - GAMES/TV/BOOK
(Links go to trailers/info)

I was tempted to just replace all the titles with Minecraft as an unfunny joke (I was addicted, shortly.) Nothing so refreshing as collaborative teamwork that doesn’t involve murdering as many other players as you can before the map changes (i.e. the overwhelming majority of multiplayer experiences currently available) I think FEZ previously awoken something in me last month, as most of my gaming this month is retro-centric (Rage fits, ironically.) I’m also not finished with American Horror Story, but I’m close. It’s all building up to something. Korra is taking for fucking ever to air, so catch up at your leisure (we’re up to what, episode 7?) Also, Game of Thrones has been phenomenal this season (unlisted since I already played that card last month)

SONIC UGC - Never appreciated SEGA so much. Great to experience the progression of their games over the years.
HALO
- Somehow more enjoyable than most recent games in the same genre.
RAGE - Super pretty and short, really worth the $15
MINECRAFT - More of an elaborate toy than an actual game, but an experience that I’d love to see implemented in other/any games in the future
DEAD ISLAND - I loved the amazing trailer, not so much the game. Impressive yet shallow.

KORRA - Like a lost treasure of 90s Disney animation, full of spirit, beautiful and rewarding
ARCHER S3 - Bigger, badder, faster, smarter, etc. Laughed every episode.
AMERICAN HORROR STORY - Intriguing, thrilling. The Others meets Beetlejuice(?) A lot seems to hang on the ending, which I’ve yet to see…
WALKING DEAD S2- Stumbling since it began, I hope 3rd season gets it right

INFECTED (novel) - Interesting ideas, weak author. Watch BUG instead!

APRIL - Movies

This month seemed like a race to the bottom. I think once I get one crappy movie under my belt, I end up seeing a lot of other mediocre titles I wouldn’t see otherwise. Standards are lowered. In fact, I avoided seeing a few movies I knew would be great just to avoid the comparison. Although, there are still way more sub-par films to see, it could take a while…

Anyway, here’s what I’ve seen in the last month (in order of favoritism):

Rise (otPotA) - The most enjoyable movie I’ve seen in quite a while. Not remarkable, great for a summer blockbuster.
Drive - Pretty solid film, I’m conflicted about R.Gosling; seems more awkward “empty vessel” than mysterious action-man (see: Lars and the Real Girl)
Scott Pilgrim - It’d be fun just to watch the spectacle even if the story sucked (which it totally doesn’t!)
Battle Royal - Solidly enjoyable, I should see other manga-to-films
Super 8 - Cloverfield meets The Goonies. Kids cursing is always fun. (I hate that JJ Abrams lens flare shit though, really irritating.)
The UP series - (currently at 42 UP) Feels more like an experiment than doc. You’ll never see anything else quite like it, if you’ve the time/patience. It’s fun to predict which of the subjects are going to be successful/happy/etc. (The “farm boy” Paul…)
Insidious - Actually spooked me at times (congrats, movie), placing solid shocks in perfect moments. Still, spent more time rolling my eyes than being scared
The Fall - Goddamned gorgeous visuals marred by a lame narrative (also maybe the worst child actor I’ve seen.) Tarsem should stick to horror! Some moments here were unnervingly bizarre.
Captain America - Mediocre in every way. Saw it for The Avengers relation
Fantastic Mr Fox - Wes Anderson continues to disappoint (me), I’m still a fan though

APRIL - GAMES/TV

Here’s what I’ve played/seen in the last month:

Batman Arkham City - Best superhero game ever made. Would play again but I’m typing this at the moment. Everything done really well, esp. the music!
Resistance 3 - For a pew pew game, very rich atmosphere. War of the Worlds: The Game.
Alpha Protocol - I love underdogs, at least, acknowledging them. This wasn’t doing it for me. Deus Ex minus everything cool, with last-gen era gameplay.
Game of Thrones - Goddamn please don’t kill Peter Dinklage!
Parks and Rec - I fought it at first, but quickly fell for it.
Californication - No other show demands that I watch it as much as Cali does.
Skins - Season 6 has me losing faith in the series. Wouldn’t be the first time. I’ll be there at 7.
Life’s too Short - Extras 2.0 can be quite funny, if also sad at times. Celeb cameos are far and away the most entertaining part of the show (Johnny Depp scene)
Tim and Eric - Refuse/lost/deleted visual media from 80s-90s that coalesced and grew consciousness. Good and bad. Mostly good!

April12012

Movies of… March.
—The films I’ve seen in the past month, majority are first-time viewings. Listed in order of favoritism:

Man on Wire - Exhilarating is the perfect word, see box.
Being Elmo - Interesting, entertaining. Pretty well paced and well made overall.
The Lion in Winter - Classic play turned classic film. Great lines and scenes. Memorable!
Adaptation - Didn’t love it as much as I used to. I used to be more neurotic.
Dark Days - Satisfied my curiosity on the subject. A nice ending as well.
The Game - “Is THIS a part of the game?” you ask. Then M.Douglas is behind you.
The Hunger Games -Themes are presented but not explored or questioned and nothing/no one really changes… neat ideas/designs, interesting music by JNH.
Dirty Harry - Not a fan, wanted more time, character, story from C.E.
Microcosmos - I learned nothing, but perhaps gained perspective? Amazing for 1996.
The Philosopher Kings - Pandering and short-sighted. “Janitors are people too.”

Games & more… March

—Posting titles I’ve only first experienced in March, so no multiplayer or continuing unfinished titles (Battlefield 3, Skyrim, tv/anime/book)

Rayman Origins - A pleasant surprise! I’m not into sidescrollers but this was amazing. Every level has a “wow” factor, every play session I felt satisfied.
Mass Effect 3 -  Despite feeling like an off-season of a favorite TV series, enjoyable overall.
Starhawk Beta - Some fun ideas, a FPS that becomes more of a living RTS
Dark Sector - Cost $5. Shows how far we’ve come from 2007, if nothing else.
Dark Star One - Same as ^, except 1997. Which is ok, since nothing like this exists since then on consoles. Really wish bigger devs would try this genre…
Monster (Anime) - Haven’t nearly finished but enjoying the pace and tone. Suspense!
Wizard & Glass - The Dark Tower series continues. Not wanting it to end makes it harder to read.
Girl Who Kicked… - 30% done but I’m out. Dragon Tattoo was solid, but this and Hornet’s Nest are padded filler.
Military SciFi - I love scifi universes, and this offers a taste of many. Something to pass time here and there, get a sense of which authors to check out.
